Hi everybody,
As Kath rightly pointed out to me today, I've haven't written anything new for over 2 weeks, which is a bit rubbish, so I'll do a quick catch up. I had a fantastic week in Chiang Mai with some great day trips white water rafting, flying along zip lines in the mountain jungle, and also some crazy quad biking in the hills in the Burmese border.
I bumped into Graham Bunyan as well and we had a beer and he told me the good news about Andrew and Ning's second little one on the way. The city was really chilled but there were planty of interesting people to chat with, including a cracking night in the university quarter with all the trendy Thai students who took really good care of me when they could see that I was a little out of my depth.
I'd planned to travel down to the south for beach hopping a little further into the month but I decided it would worth flyjng to Koh Phanang a little early to catch the Full Moon Party. I wasn't dissapointed, it was a great night with tens of thousands of great people with exactly the right sort of attitude. Getting there was one of stand out memories. I was actually staying on Koh Samui as there are far more places to stay there than Phanang, and so you take short 20 minute powerboat ride over the water to the party. Hundreds of people were picked up from their hotels and taken to a holding area on the beach where we waited to be assigned a boat. No suprises there was also a bar there with massively inflated prices! It started to rain in the usual tropical manner and my number was called so we waded in waist deep water into the back of the open top boat. After 45 minutes and no movement we were ready to mutiny and all abandoned ship. The ride across was breathtaking, with an intense lightening storm exploded over the boat as it sped over the water.
After a long sleep for a day or so I thought it would be cool to hang around in Samui for a week or so but in the end I was bitterly disappointed by what Koh Samui is, which it turns out is just the Costa del Sol in all but name. I met a couple of nice people but generally didn't really click with most of the holidaymakers that were there for exactly that, a package holiday.
I knew I had to go somewhere else and found Railay in the The Book and was immediately taken. So that was it, i booked the travel and here I am. I'll write all about my time here in my next blog and add some more pictures soon. I'm off the Australia on Sunday!
Till next time......
