Hello Again,
I'm writing form Sunny Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Initial impressions are really good with a friendly mountain city with loads of day trips and excursions into the jungle including some quad biking and white water rafting. I've had a tough few days with a pretty diassapoiting stop in Lop Buri (didn't see any monkeys!) but I did get to feed an elephant! I was wandering around and stared chatting to a couple of American chaps in the towns only pub. They seemed nice enough and were teaching English and had been in the town for 3 weeks. I was soon invited to a party back in Bangkok which sounded pretty call so after another three or few drinks I agreed to come along. I was still on English time and the propect of laying awake in my unairconditioned room (plus you should have seen how grotty it was, but what do you expext for 2 quid a night!?) was one that i couldn't face. a 2 hour taxi ride later and the party was unsuprisingly awfull. It was the worst 80s bar I've ever come across but fortunately there were some others on the same road that weren't half bad. In one bar they were playing Sublime so I went in, got chatting with the owner and he let me choose the music from my mp3 player for an hour or so till closing time. What a nice guy! By now Oren (the guy who'd invited us to the party) had promptly jumped in a cab with some random girls and had left his mate Nick and I with a drunken phone message about being on our own and to stop trying to call him! We got a taxi to the Khao San road and I was starting to think that I would never get away from Bangkok! Nick and I drank in a 24 hour pub until about 4am just chilling out until he too dissapeared off somewhere. I got chatting to this guy from Arazona who was flying to Alaska to become a shrimp fisherman. I was trying to get him to consider something a little more challenging to do with his life!
Sunday began with a 2 hour taxi ride back to Lop Buri, some driver was more than happy to drive 100 miles for 20 quid! But I was shattered and relief was not to be found back in my flea pit of a hotel and so after half an hour of trying to sleep I had a cold shower in my little bathroom and grabbed my stuff and headed for the bus station. A friendly policeman could see that was lost so gave me a lift there and pointed me in the direction of the right bus. 10 hours later and I found myself in Chiang Mai in a nice clean comfy hotle with a decent pool. So now off to do some sight seeing and then back to the hotel for a swim I think.
I Hope you're all well, please send me a message if you get a chance.
All the Best,
Paddy
