Belize - Chicken Buses, Caye Caulker and Snorkelling with Sharks
We traveled via Chetumal to Orange Walk in the north of Belize and had our first experience of a chicken bus. Crowded, hot and complete madness but something we´re now becoming accustomed to! Orange Walk itself was a ´real´ backpackers dream but to a couple of 30-something shandies like ourselves it was a total sh*thole populated by people who had an alarming resemblance to each other. The town also became an early contendor for the largest cockroach spotted on the trip so far. Interestingly for a town situated in the middle of Belize it had a ratio of 1 Chinese restaurant for every 2 inhabitants. Still haven´t worked that one out. The reason for this detour was to visit Mayan ruins at Lamanai via a 2 hour boat journey up the (crocodile infested) New River which was fantastic and made the couple of days in Hicksville with the in-breds worthwhile! After a couple of days though we were pining for white sands and turquoise seas so it was off to another Caribbean Island - Caye Caulker. Here we snorkeled with Sharks (even Debs!) and Stingrays and then it was across to Guatemala for a few days...
