Nicaragua - Power cuts, Perspiration and probably the best beer in the world?...
Nicaragua is pretty new on the backpacking scene and we were looking forward to a rugged experience with unexplored mountains, lakes etc. The reality was somewhat different!... Central America during the wet season is a hot and humid place to be and Nicaragua is at least 5 degrees hotter than anywhere else we´d been to date! The Lonely Planet assured us we´d acclimatise in days but 5 weeks on we´re still setting new benchmarks for sweating!!! Rushty and Spensley - probably not the best holiday destination for you! We arrived in Leon on 1st July expecting a few chilled out days seeing the sights of one of Nicaragua´s top cities. 10 hours later we were on a bus to Granada having seen the sights of Leon in about an hour! We then spent a few days in a really nice hostel here lounging in hammocks and cooling off in the pool. It was pretty difficult to do much else as Nicaragua is experiencing an energy and water crisis which meant we were without both for at least 5 hours a day. The local launderette, after 2 days, was still unable to wash our clothes because they´d have electricity OR water, but never both! (or so they said!!!) The highlight of Nicaragua for Paddy at least was his newfound appreciation of Tona beer (see photos). Odd that he now claims it´s the best beer in the world having previously sworn that it´s rival, Victoria Beer, was superior - apparently he says it´s got a better body to it!!!
Our original plan had been to travel further into the country but it soon became clear that we´d need a lot more time if we were going to see the places we´d planned to visit. With only 11 days to go until our flight left for Ecuador, and with the call of the Cloud Forests of Costa Rica, we decided to go leave Nicaragua and head for San Jose in search of howler monkeys and clean pants....
