Heading on from La Paz we took the nightbus to Uyuni. It certainly was a unique experience. The trip had its ups and downs, usually following each other in a rapid succession hour after hour.. Noticing the general lack of isolation, absence of a radiator and insufficient supply of blankets, we quickly grabbed some blankets from the seats in front of us. As we suspected the temperature soon plummeted. Opening our bags of tricks we put on layer after layer until we would have made Bear Grylls proud. The british girls in front of us would not have gotten the same aknowledgement from the grizzly brit. (pun intended!) Being a true "STAR" Gard lent the girls a blanket and some wollen socks to prevent them from freezing to death in their thights and flip-floppas. Shockingly we arrived without accident in a pitch black ghost-town at 6 am. Later we were told that the driver had been spraying alcohol on the windshield to keep the ice off, finishing the last hours of driving with a clear windshield, but in a fog of alcohol fumes.
After a quick warn-up in a hostel we jumped in a Landcruiser and headed for the Salt flats. A few hours of driving later we had lunch on "Fish island" in the middle of the flats. When we were posing to get some pictures from the lovely scenery, we were attacked by f***ING GODZILLA!!! After defeating this mighty beast we headed on to the hotel. The building itself was made completely out of salt-bricks harvested out of the desert. We had a nice dinner followed by a marxist propaganda speech from our guide, Gonzalo. Looks like ex-cocaine farmer Evo Morales really IS the only salvation for Bolivia.
The following day went by largely uneventful, except for the jaw-dropping pictures taken in the back seat (!).
Upon returning from the Salt flats we had our last dinner with Malin and Eirik. They were going back to Santa Cruz while we headed on across the Argentinian border.
