On Friday we put in a long drive to Cadiz in Spain - in rain that has kept going since. Rain like tropical storms - only it kept up all day and night. Took the edge off things.
Cadiz is Europe's oldest town and the site is magnificent with beach either side of the old city. Even through waves of rain it loooed wonderful. It wold be magnificent in the sun. We made a wander throgh the old cathedral followeed by a short wander around town before lunch.; The wander took in the old fish markets - one of the great places in towns around the Mediterranean. Fish iof all kinds with prices being shouted continously as locals make their way around before buying. IN Lisbomn the mercato was industrialised and modernised - but here was rustic, and the smnell of fish and the sea was strong - clean mind you
Sunday was a trip to the 'white village' of Arcos de la Fontera - and as the guide promised it was charming. Pleasantto stroll up to thecastle and the churches there - and convents and their chapels. And a lovely meal - traditionally cooked rabit, meat balls, and paella. It was great way to celebrate Jen's birthday.

Pat Thanks for news of your Cadiz doings. I've recently been reading a fascinating book about Alexander von Humboldt, a great German naturalist, a couple of generations before Darwin. His scientific journeys in Latin America 1799-1804 were very important in a long career in travel and research. I mention this in relation to your Spanish journey because all of the his work in this period was done in the Spanish Empire . . . about which I realised I know hardly anything (except from various British/US perspectives!) Enough trivia! Early bed, to get up for Wallabies v Argentina match. Cheers. Pat
