Today has been an experience!!!
Neither of us slept well last night and funnily enough woke up at the same time hungry! We think we are now over the jet lag though.
Started early this morning - had a lovely breakfast in the hotel, Thai's even seem to have noodles at 7am! We were picked up at 7.30 and arrived at The Grand Palace at 8.30, it was boiling! Our tour guide, Suki was brilliant and so was the Canadian lady we met along the way!
We then went to a gem place, we were shown how they are shaped. We tried on some very expensive rings, you'll be pleased to hear we didn't make any purchases, the Candian lady did though!
We then went to see the reclining budda at Wat Pho. It was massive and nearly doesn't fit in it's building. We still can't believe how much traffic there is, we have probably spent more time in taxis than visting the sights!
This took us up until about 14.00, we then decided it would be a good idea to walk through Bangkok in the blistering heat (40 degrees +) to the main train station. Little did we know it was on the other side of the river, thanks to our freebie map! It took us over an hour, a walk through smelly markets, smelly drains, burnt ducks hung up in windows and tramps laying in the street! Once we finally got to the train station we found out that the first class overnight train to Chaing Mai was fully booked for both tomorrow and Friday. Therefore we have booked a bus!! We leave tomorrow night.
We then tackled the Metro. Actually it was brilliant and very quick. We will now be using this in future.
After arriving back at our hotel hot and sweaty we discovered our hotel had an outside pool, so we got straight in!
Our intention for tonight was to go the Sirocco Sky Bar for sunset. We obviously didn't learn from our earlier experience and got in to a taxi - he didn't know where it was so we tried another - he didn't know either! We ended up getting one from the hotel, at this point the sun had already set and our taxi was showing 5 pound on the meter having just turned the corner from the hotel. We decided to cut our losses and come back to the hotel for a beer! We are now sat in the hotel with a beer, peanuts and free internet access so wasn't a bad deal afterall!
Tomorrow we have another early start at the floating market and then head off to Chaing Mai early evening! We won't be able to do a blog tomorrow as we will be on the 11 hour coach journey!
