Right now we are sitting on the Bluebridge ferry on our way over to the South Island. Neither of us likes boats that much and especially not right now. It's rocking back and forth and we both feel sick and un-easy and just want to get off.
The last couple of days in the capital have been spent trying to dodge the rain, which has seemed never-ending.
Yesterday however, it stopped and it seemed like it was going to be an okay day and we didn't want to miss out on a day to actually see Wellington, so we got out of bed and headed for the bus stop and to one of our favourite places - and before you say it; no, it's not the cinema - it's the ZOOOO!!!
I love being around animals, so whether it's in a zoo, a farm or me just heading out in to the woods trying to find a furry friend to cuddle, I'm happy.
Wellington zoo has around 500 animals, from lions, tigers, sunny bears, a cheetah, 2 giraffes (a mother and her baby), african wild dogs, penguins, otters, Australian flamingos, monkeys, lots of different birds and the cutest thing I've seen since a picture of baby-David in a kilt - a red panda! Oh my, it's absolutely adorable and is now on my future pets list. (just google it)
Sadly we were forced to cut our visit to the animal kingdom short because the rain started again and it just got heavier and heavier and since Dave has misplaced his rain coat, he got soaked and so did I. It said on the hostel wall of '100 things to do in Wellington when it rains' that the animals at the Wellington zoo don't care if it rains or not, but I don't think that was entirely true. The animals were doing their best to stay out of sight and out of the rain, except for mr tiger who kept walking around in circles around the same bush, probably playing "Busken sover". (Swedish game)
Even the two giraffes stayed inside and we had a quick chat with mamma giraffe while we were taking shelter before running back to the reception.
It was a shame the weather couldn't stay dry as we didn't get to see all of the animals, but considering YHA members got the entry tickets half-prize we might come back on our way back if the weather is better.
Our first stop on the South Island is Nelson and after getting the YHA membership, we will stay at their hostels wherever we can on the South Island. We hope the one in Nelson which we will check in to later today will be as good as the one we just checked out from in Wellington. That was named the best hostel in Wellington and as soon as we stepped inside, we understood why!
They had absolutely everything you could imagine, it is massive and very clean and modern and it has something for everyone. They have big posters and notice boards all over with information about anything from '100 free stuff to do in Wellington', how to travel smart, places you should visit, to car lifts and job listings.
In the main women's bathroom they even have a hair dryer and a ghd straightener for everyone to use!
They just think of everything and it's by far the best hostel we have stayed at and we regret not thinking of it before checking in to icy Rosemere.
We can definitely recommend it to anyone who visits Wellington!
Now, we're almost there and it's time to go downstairs to Rosie and get ready to drive off and start exploring the South Island and we are soo excited!!
Hugs and Kisses
