Our Global Gallivants
The sun was shining this morning when we got up! It didn't last the whole day, but was encouraging to start with. We were standing on the path that is right next to the sand, admiring the colour of the water. I kept feeling something tickling my leg, thinking it's just a piece of grass. Finally I look down at the back of my calf and the first thing I thought was holy ****, there's a tarantula on my leg, because it was that big! Then I got a grip on myself and said Dave, look what's on my leg. He takes a step back and says, what is that? How the hell would I know? I take a couple of swipes at it with the flip flops in my hand and finally knock it off. Then I start fumbling with the camera try to get a picture of it. It looks like it might be missing a few legs now, though. It's legs were all spread out like a spider's. I think it must be some kind of plant eater, because it was all green. It's probably Bambi of the insect world, but when you see something you've never seen before, all splayed out on your leg, you just react, much like mom smacking us with whatever was in her hand at the time.
We decided to walk into town and have a look around. Today was definitely the hottest day we've had so far-temp somewhere in the 30's. The path to the townsite is a little treacherous in places because the "steps" are steep in places and are just tree roots. There were a few nice beaches along the way with nice sand few people on them. Our beach is busy because people come to Phi Phi Island for all or part of a day and they walk from town to the first beach they come across. We are a good 1/2 hour walk from town. There were a few photo ops of Dave modelling along the way.
We were taking a shortcut from 1 beach to another across some boulders. The tide was out and it was so gross because there were so many water beetles scurrying away from us that it looked like the ground was moving. It was like a scene from a horror movie!
The little town has a lot of shops, restaurants and hotels, all catering to tourists. We had lunch there and then walked back.
We put our bathing suits on, grabbed our masks and snorkels and rushed down to the beach to do some snorkelling. Just as we are going to enter the water, Dave realizes his full face mask is broken. We do have some crazy glue, but decided to fix it at home. I did see some fish, nothing too exciting other than 2 huge parrot fish.
We had dinner at the resort next door. Not very good.
