Our Global Gallivants
Breakfast is included with our room-what a gong show that was! This hotel (Fairfield Inn, Marriott) is full of preschool kids. Every food tray was wiped out, refilled and wiped out again. Must go earlier tomorrow. We went to see Dierkes Lake as a side trip to the Shoshone Falls. There were a few people having scuba lessons there. The lake is only 25-30 feet deep and apparently has some man made"sights" on the bottom for the divers. Shoshone Falls was very interesting. It's a series of 4 damns, separated by rock walls in the Snake River Canyon. The falls are quite grand-212 feet tall and 950 ft wide. There's a nice pathway that runs along the top of the canyon, so we went for a walk along there. We were trying to figure out why Snake River Canyon sounded a little familiar to us. It's where Evel Knievel made a motorcycle jump in 1974. He was going to try and jump the 1 mile across the canyon on a rocket. He didn't make it. If you watch the YouTube video of the event, it appears that he plopped down at the foot of the canyon on the same side he took off from. The only thing left of that attempt is the dirt ramp that they built to put the launcher on. We also went to look at the Perrine Bridge. The I. B. Perrine Bridge is a truss arch four-lane bridge carrying U.S. Highway 93 over the Snake River Canyon. Perrine Bridge is approximately 1,500 feet long and 486 feet above the Snake River. It is one of the few places where BASE jumping is legal. Construction started: November 1926 Went back to the hotel to do some laundry and then for Mexican food for dinner at La Fiesta. Steps on the Fitness Tracker: 17,000
