Our Global Gallivants
Today we went to a place famous for it's egg tarts, but decided to have a pineapple bun instead. Not the best decision, because the bun was cold. Later in the day we tried a different place that's known for its egg tarts and decided we like the north point bakery better. We went shopping in an electronics mall and each bought a new toy. I had been wanting a fine point stylus for sketching out some ideas on the iPad and found one there.
Then it was on to the bus up to the peak. We've taken the tram to the peak on previous trips, so opted out this time. It was an interesting ride because the road is narrow and windy. There are some areas where you get a sneak peak at the incredible view. There is a walking loop at the top called Lugard Rd. And we did that walk. It is a beautiful paved walk almost enclosed by trees and plants with some viewpoints along the way. That is where you really get a sense of the crazy density of the population here. Unbelievable!
From there, we ran a few errands and then had an early dinner at a place famous for its barbecued and roasted meats. It was no longer there, but there was a different restaurant serving the same items, so we gave it a try. The duck was delicious-warm and flavourful.
Dave is having some pain in his hip muscle, so we booked a Thai massage. I think I like that better than a Swedish massage. You're not rubbed down with oil. Instead, you're wearing a Thai outfit of a t-shirt and loose cotton Capri length bottom. They don't have direct contact with your skin except on your arms and lower legs. Your muscles are loosened at the start with pressure at various points. They definitely know where the sore spots are, and it seemed like it was my whole body. After you are loosened up, the fun begins! I did not know that I could bend in so many directions. While laying face down, your ankles are crossed first one way and then the other and then brought up and pressed on your bum. Definitely that felt good! The other good stretch was when she bends your elbow and pins your hand on your back. Then she snakes her arm under your arm and raises your bent elbow toward the ceiling. Then she grabs your arms and tells you to hang on to her wrists. She straightens out your arms and pulls you backward so you're raising off the bed and your upper torso is bending at the waist, like touching your toes in reverse. Aagghh!
But it was when you're on your back that things get even more interesting. She pins you down, bends your knee up toward your chest and then across your body. I was so twisted that I couldn't even breathe. It made me think about how effective some wrestling techniques are at incapacitating you. There were a few manoeuvres that I thought she might break something because I don't bend that way. Sit up on the bed with your legs stretched straight out in front of you and she starts to quickly rotate your torso in a circle. That made me really nervous because it seemed like maybe my back could break. I was fighting it and she's telling me to relax. They finish up with your neck and scalp massage. I was definitely loose after that. A regular regimen of those stretches could definitely improve my karate.
We went for a walk afterwards and then to a desert house. Yum!
Another fun day!
