I don't know if there was a better way to wrap up a trip like this one. First we started off at the Urban Planning Museum where we saw the most amazing models of Shanghai City. The models didn't even encompass the entirety of this HUGE city. Next was my favorite part, visiting the elders. They were so lively and had the most cheerful spirits- I was in awe. They clapped before we even introduced ourselves. To be completely honest, I was quite surprised. I came into the service learning project with a certain paradigm, that the older generations of Chinese were more closed minded and didn't like African-Americans (experience from in the states) but I have never been more wrong in my life. They were more than accepting, they wantd me to make them more cranes, and sing more songs with them, teach them more English, and play more games with them. I was truly struck by the experience- I think appreciation is understood in every language. It was pretty cool that the elders are referred to as "grandma and grandpa" rather than old man or old woman. I hope they realize they impacted my life more than I could ever impact their lives. In the evening, we had the best meal since I've been in China. Note to self.... go to more spicy restaurants. Oh and ofcourse we ended the evening with more shopping. The bus ride home completes my journey to use every mode of transportation on this trip. Tomorrow we fly back, I miss my bed, I can't wait. I will miss you Peoples Republic of China.
