I cannot believe I am actually sitting on a sunlounger under some palm trees on an island in the middle of the South Pacific ocean, with the most glorious warmth radiating from the sun, and having witnessed some of the most turquoise/azure blues in the water on my way here. After an early start this morning, I boarded a rusty old bus which transferred myself and other passengers to the Port Denarau marina to commence our boat transfer out the the Yasawa island chain. Port Denerau is a millionaire's playground for the residents, and the only hotels to be found here boast 5 stars (looking forward to staying in one on my return to the mainland!). What Port Denarau / Denarau island lacks however, is the cultural atmosphere of Fiji. Fiji is still very much a developing country where villages have a chief at the centre of their social infrastructure. Anyone visiting a village must obtain permission from the chief first. Although more developed than East Africa, Fiji brings back fond memories of my time in Uganda in 2008. Anyway, I'm digressing - so back to the marina . . . . After boarding the 'Yasawa Flyer' catamaran we cruised through the Mamanuca group of islands and the Yasawas. I arrived at my destination, or I should say we stopped in the ocean a little way from my destination 4.5 hours after departing Denarau marina. We jumped into a small fishing boat to be transferred to the island of Nacula, where I am staying at the Nabua lodge. The ameneties are pretty basic, but the location is unbeatable - the blue lagoon can be seen from the beach, and it is a sight to behold. I learnt today that there is no graceful way to get into a hammock! Luckily no-one saw and then unluckily I discovered that the inviting hammock I saw as I was wandering the beach actually wasn't part of Nabua lodge and was a villager's private hammock! They never asked me to move, it was only when I thought I could see a boundry fence to the lodge's grounds that I asked a girl nearby. I apologised profusely and then left! I knew it was too good to be true, as it was right on the beach front, but I still got 1.5 hours use out of it reading my book! Tomorrow I'm off on a trip to some underwater caves! xx
