Oh my word what a relief to be out of Pakse and finally at the 4000 islands (Si Pan Don). So we arrived on the habour at 16.00, just a 10 minute long tail boat ride across the Mekong to the island of Don Det. On reaching the island we went bungalow hunting, well actually that should be Bryn went bungalow hunting while I got a coke and stood guard of the bags at the local cafe. Bryn came back looking like he'd just jumped in the river... Major cloud burst while he was hunting!
Don Det is a pretty small island, but is being turned into a bit of a backpackers hippy island with plenty of happy shakes and hammocks. We ended up paying 20,000 Laos Kip for the bungalow per night which is about 75p pppn! Madness! Definitely our cheapest digs so far!
The few days on Don Det kind of murged into 1. Exploring the island by foot, relaxing on the Japanese style cushions on the floor in the cafes, reading books and avoiding drugged food! A few friends had some pretty nasty encounters with happy shakes. One friend described it as suddenly feeling paralysed, not being able to stand up to go to the loo so ended up dragging herself along the floor to get there, and lights jumping across the room.
The last day there we arranged a fishing trip with the 3 Canadians and the 2 English southerners. 65000 kip for a fishing rod and a fishless river amounted to frozen fish on a fire. But there are worse places to spend your time than sat on the Mekong watching the sunset with friends.
Impulse decision to head down to the islands of Thailand the next day and so began a 44 hour journey south west.
Love Jo and Bryn x x x
