9th July 2013 - we left the hotel in cusco at 715am and drove to the local bus terminal where we caught the bus at just after 8am to Puno. It is nice modern double decker bus but didn't play any movies. We drove for just over 3 .5 hours passing by lots of farming country and small poor rural communities. We arrive at Feliz Viaje a pass between the providence of cusco and puno. The bus stopped here and we are at an altitude of 4300 m above sea level. You can feel the affect on your body, it starts to become very tring just walking. Had a quick bathroom break and there were also several ladies selling various souvenirs. Back on the bus and we had only traveled a couple when it stopped and started reversing... We had left 3 passengers behind. Picked them up and continued on our way to Puno. The countryside changes as there is less farming due to the altitude and more grazing for animals mostly lama and alpacas and some sheep. We drove through the town of Juliaca about an hour out of Puno. It seemed as if every building in this place was half finished and everyone was trying to sell something. The roads where half finished and many where dirt but it is a very large city. We learnt that everyone here wants to be a business owner so they save up a little money and build a two story place, lower level for business and upper level for living but they never have enough money to finish the home as it is difficult to loans from the bank so they just keep adding little but little as they save up more money. But they aren't very good at saving money they prefer instead to buy new tv or new clothes so many place are never really finished.
We arrived in Puno a little after 3:30pm. Caught a small mini van to the hotel and then had a quick rest before going on a walk around the city. There is the main square called place de arms, which seems to be the main square in almost every Peru town. On side is the cathedral and also government offices and the court house built in 1950s when then walked along the pedestrian mall of Lima ave and then made our way to the square of parque pino. Dinner at a local restaurant before heading to the supermarket to grab a couple things for the islands tomorrow.
