30th June-
Has an average sleep followed but an alright breakfast at the hotel... They had these spicy cookies covered in sesame seeds that were delicious. Got the 930am bus to Rethymno. Was glad to get an early bus as this way I have the chance for a good day visit. Bus arrived an hour and half later in the sea aide bus station. Wa able to store my backpack there for tue day while I explored the village. The storage facilities are under left luggage. It makes more sense now as I kept seeing this sign for left luggage ai airports and bus stations and was thinking a lot of people must lose there luggage and then have to come and claim it back... But no it is just the storage room.
The sat market was on next to the bus station. Took a quick walk through... The fruit and vegetables all looked so tasty.... the food here has all been amazing and I guess with some much local produce it is easy to cook yummy meals.
Walked along the sea wall to the fortress. These one was open and free entry for student so double bonus compared to yesterday's. It is Venetian built with lions craved into the walls. Small sections have been reconstructed and provided a nice view out over the sea. Continued walking along the sea wall towards the old port. Walked out to the lighthouse but it was run down and covered with graffiti. Walked along to the main beach. Enjoyed the sun and reading my book till late afternoon. It was the best sand on a beach that I have seen in Greece yet I think. It was mid afternoon so time for lunch. Had read about a restaurant called othonas in two separate guide books so decided that was the place to eat. Enjoyed a delicious lamb and artichoke stew. After lunch walked around the old town streets. They are pretty with a Venetian feel about them small laneways and double story homes build side by side. There were lots of scooters and motorbikes parked out the front and doors to the homes were open and you could see and hear people enjoying the company of friends and family on the weekend. found a ice cream shop ( Mona Lisa, paleologou 36) that used sheep milk to produce a slightly different flavor.... I tired the bitter chocolate and nut... So yummy. Eventually wound my way back to towards bus terminal. The left luggage was locked so went to the information desk for a key to open it. They are so casual and said my bus wasn't leaving for 25 mins they would help me closer to the time... Anyway eventually the guy opened the door and I got the 5pm bus to chania. Sat the right side the bus this time so that I could look out the window at the coast line.... And only fell asleep very briefly. Arrived in Chania and grabbed a timetable for the bus to the Samaria Gorge for tomorrow morning. Then set off to find somewere to sleep. I had looked a couple of place online so tried to find them first. Couldn't find some some of them and then the other didn't have receptions just a number you can ring, which would be alright but my phone doesn't work over an hour later Eventually found a place that had a room for the two nights and was close to bus station and town. Was a fair bit more then I had budgeted for but was tried and hot and just wanted a room. I am now starting to thinking that as it is closer to high season in Europe I should think about booking somethings in Croatia so I don't get stuck again. Went for a walk around the city as it is a very pretty old venetian port and old town. Wondered around the winding old streets and looked in the shops. There is no medium with customer service they are either so in your face with how can I help, very good prices and please look at this or you wait 10 min at the counter trying to inquire about something or pay.
Walked back to hotel via supermarket so I could get supplies for tomorrow's hike.
