11th June 2013- Made my way to the hostel were Katie and alex are staying this morning. We then walked to the bus terminal and caught a bus to saliva, a small town about 1.5 hours into the mountains. The ride was in a small bus and again windy and slow. We made it to the town and walked around the square and market. On Tuesday they have a big market were locals from the surrounding hills come into town to buy and sell goods and food. It was incredible to see all the traditional dress on both the men and women. They had on the most amazing blue colored ponchos with bright pink trim and darker brown skirts with boots often with yellow laces. Walked around looking at everything that was for sale. There was such a variety of things, jewelry, clothing both traditional and western style, shoes, bags, woven goods, food... A large selection of potatoes and grains along with fresh fruits and vegetables. They also had small cafes with snacks and meals available. Snacked on a few different things before heading out to the square to people watch and enjoy some of the fruits from the market. Found a man selling the most delicious moist orange and pineapple cake that came with a glass of fizzy apple drink as an added bonus. Was great to just watch the locals sitting and talking or some were knitting and weaving. There were also a couple of different people walking around with carts selling different things. Headed back into the market for another look around and also brought a couple more snack foods. They were selling sugar in these large solid cubes and fresh local coffee that smelled amazing. some of the stall were so varied with beads, spice and books on black magic?
Once we had look at everything and enjoy sampling some of the local food we headed back out to find a bus back to popayan. Managed to get one that was leaving fairly soon. Made our way back to popayan via the same windy road. I was lucky enough to fall asleep for most of the journey. Once back in town we walked into town and look around quickly before finding a cafe to sit and watch some of the soccer game. It was Columbia v Peru. Everyone was really exciting by the game crowding around and tv screen they could find or listening to it on the radio outside. didn't watch till the end as went to the supermarket to get supplies for the bus trip tomorrow. Picked up some salty lemon doritios on alex strong recommendation. Then we went in search of somewere for an early dinner before Katie and alex get the bus to bogota. Found an Italian restaurant that had a set menu for a good price so ate there. Enjoyed a chicken potato soup, we think were exactly sure what it was, then chicken with pasta rice and salad. Finished off with a sort off custard and fresh fruit juice. Was great to have spent the day with them and talk about things from home. I really liked the company for the day as traveling solo were little to no English is spoken was nice to be able to talk about common things in English. Back to the hostel for me and off to the bus for alex and Katie. Had a frustrating evening as am trying to get a hold of the galapogus company to confirm flights and they aren't responding. Also trying to work out the best plan for trying to head towards the boarder tomorrow.
