Staying near to Milford gave us the perfect opportunity to start out early and spend the day doing a few walks along the road back. Our first was only a twenty minute round walk from the car but it did involve a swing bridge which succeeded in scaring me but it was worth it for the waterfall the other end! The main walk of the day was approximately three hours to Key Summit, after one and half hours walking uphill our thoughts were "it better be worth it" and it definitely was with views of the mountains surrounding us and of Lake Marion. It was a walk within a walk at the top in a place which felt more like a tropical nature garden and didn't feel like it fitted with where it was! We were glad we had started out early as on the way up we didn't meet anyone but on the way down the numbers were going up rapidly, a great walk to finish off our Milford Sound trip. Our bad luck kicked in when we got back into the car, we had travelled forty kilometres along the alpine roads back to Te Anau and we realised we had left all our food and cooler bag at the lodge. We weighed up the pros and cons and decided on going back for it! We did however stop off at the Mirror Pond again where Olof had dropped the "lens hood" for his camera on the way up the day earlier and recover it for him! With our little detour we didn't arrive back in Te Anau until late afternoon for our last night in a tent! We were staying at a different campsite this time and our spot was in the middle of a field, you can see from the photos the size of our tent and the colour which blended in well in the dark, so I spent half hour paranoid a car would run us over! I can't say I wasn't looking forward to a bed but we've had a brilliant time.
