What a completely awesome day, I will upload some photographs but they dont do it justice!
We were up early, both planned and because we were actually excited, so were in the village for nine! Though without breakfast that was our first port of call, a nice porridge and croissant from Starbucks to set us up for the day. We first made our way to Skiers Plaza, well actually the main pedestrianised street through the village leads off from this so everything is really easily accessible. Next was to get our lift passes and rentals, I had decided to board again as I loved it so much in Banff and just wanted to keep practising. Definitely an expensive place but we were soon to see it was worth the money.
Olof had the mountain map and the plan so our first trip took us up Blackcomb mountain, the idea was to get on the Peak2Peak gondola as soon as possible as it was brilliant clear and sunny weather so we could take in the views. The Peak2Peak runs across from Blackcomb mountain to Whistler its something like the longest unsupported structure with only four towers, two on each mountain, it is 400 metres above the valley and 4.4km long but only takes 11 minutes to get across. Beautiful it is but definitely stomach turning!
I had jumped on and off the board a bit to travel between the lifts and negotiated my first chairlifts on a board (a lot harder than skiis!) but now over on Whistler it was time to really get going! We decided on taking the trail all the way down into village first, really just trying everything and with Olof being a great teacher to push me on, I was getting on with some good turns and a little speed! I had a couple of dramatic board over the head falls but overall I felt like I was taking to it really well, I think I even surprised Olof!
Tired but really enjoying it, we went up again the same route and were really shocked to see it was already three, that gives you some idea of how big this place is (or am I that slow!) so it was the same trail down into the village. By this point my the muscles in my legs were starting to burn but getting into some turns kept the fun and we made our way down. It was pretty amazing coming down the last slope into the village, the semi circle courtyard around the mountain is lined with restaurants and bars and there's music playing. Just a really good atmosphere, we definitely made the most of it!
After dropping back the boards we had a look around the village and Whistler was priviliged to be chosen as a special place to get another badge for our backpacks. I also did a few quick sums to see if we could spend another day here, unfortunately it wont be but we'll definitely be back in the future. Having not been to many ski resorts I'm probably not the best to judge but Olof put it at the top of his list!
An amazing day, an amazing place, best day so far!
