Ol n' Ben around the world
Wake up at 10 after a full night sleep.
No kayak today. Instead, we go for a day hike in order to explore the neighborhood. After breakfast, we thus walk towards Svea glacier. The weather is sunny (again !).
When approaching the glacier, we pass close to arctic terns nests (pretty noisy !) and walk on the moraine where 2 polar bears were seen two weeks ago. Caution !
In order to reach the glacier, we have to cross a river coming it. It is quite difficult because there is nowhere where the river is narrow. Some of us get rid of their shoes and walk through cold water. We jump over it, and manage to reach the other side with dry feet !
We finally walk on the glacier for real. It is very impressive. The first part is the "dead part" of the glacier, without any crev**************s. The view over Svea bay is completely unreal !!
Our guide knows the place very well and leads us very close to the active part of the glacier : we discover small ponds, gigantic cracks, crevasses.... The scenery is amazing ; it seems like we are on another planet !
After spending some time admiring the landscape surrounding us, we finally leave the glacier and walk towards the peak overlooking the area, at 350 meters of altitude. The way up is quite difficult through the mountain scree slope. But the view from the top was gorgeous, in spite of the arrival of clouds and grey sky. We have lunch there, enjoying this amazing view over the glacier and the bay.
After lunch, we walk down the hill and reach a ridge path leading us to the tundra which is full of flowers, moss and lichen. We enter a small canyon where we find ourselves facing two reindeer skeletons with tangled antlers. They must have died after a fight, drowned in the river.
Five minutes after, we face two reindeers, very alive and gently wandering in the tundra !
We finally reach the shore as daylight starts to dim a bit. We "steal" some pesto, chocolate bars and dried tartiflette in Francois's campground, grab the gas supplies at Matthieu's campground, and head back to our campsite.
