Ol n' Ben around the world
Wake up at 10 after a night without shift. We do not pack our stuff as we will stay one more night on this site. Today, will try to gain 2 hours on the sun, so we have breakfast and prepare the kayaks quickly.
Without tents and all the rest of the camp stuff, kayals feel very light ! O. takes the K1 today, and I board the K2R with Anthony.
We paddle towards the end of Ekmanfjord and Sefström glacier. It is a 10km journey.
Weather is (again !) sunny and the sea very calm.
We reach the glacier very fast. We disembark on a beach close to it. We walk for 5 minutes towards the glacier. We are VERY close and we can enjoy the magnificent blue color of the ice. Suddenly, a gigantic calving occurs right in front of us ! The noise is very loud. We climb on rocks in order to avoid the big wave caused by the the calving, but in the end it is not so big at all.
We go back to the kayaks and paddle to cross the bay along the glacier. We can see two large ice caves digged by the river running below the glacier.
We stop on an island to have lunch. We rapidly discover footprints of a polar bear and its baby on the ground. Quite impressive ! But those footprints do not seem fresh so the situation is not (too) dangerous !
Just before leaving, an another huge calving occurs, but everything's ok. We board the kayaks and paddle back to the camp. We paddle in the middle of the bay where we find a strong current that pushes us, which is pretty cool ! Clouds are definitely gone, and the sky is blue-er than ever. The scenery is amazing, with reddish mountains surrounded by blue sky and sea. Is it Arizona ? South America ? Can't believe this is arctic landscape !
When reaching the camp, we have a hot mint tea, put on our wellies and walk towards the waterfall through the tundra. The flow of the waterfall is pretty low, but the scenery and the view over the camp is gorgeous.
I go to bed quite early after dinner because my shift is from 4 to 6 am.
O. wakes me at 3:45. It is quite chilly but the sun is still there. No wind, almost no clouds. I put my iPod on: unreal experience ! Out of time...
At 5 am, hundreds of arctic sterns come and start an amazing ballet : they dive and fish right in front of the campsite. And I'm the only one who can enjoy this show :-)
I finally go to bed at 6am for my second half of night !
