Bumped into Nox on our way to work this morning who told told us James and Jess were climbing the peak with him at 2 - I nervously jumped at the chance to join! Nox politely informed mum it was "probably" a bit much for her. So off we went through the hilltop village of Baba, had a 'tour' of the weightlifting gym of Fiji's Olympians - pretty much a tin shed. As the concrete steps disappeared we hiked up through 45 degree inclines, clutching at vines and rocks for support. After stopping for water and photos Nox informed us only 1 person has turned back in the 6 years he's been doing it - for fear of heights... I quickly understood why - the next part was a few rocks jutting out of the edge of a sheer drop of jungle! After an hour and a half we were finally at the top - and what an amazing view! Levuka's enormous oval looked like a postage stamp from the 1300 metre peak and we had an clear view of far off islands. The trip down was not as exhausting but much more slippery, with a few tumbles by all of us (except Nox) - we were certainly relieved to be back on flat ground and kicked back at the Royal Hotel's quaint pool.
