There was a wave of relief that hit us this morning when waking up. Relief that we have all day to explore Bangkok at our leisure. Relief that we still have one more night in this funky hotel, thus leaving our clothes unpacked and all over our room. Relief that we do NOT have to take any long journeys, just short metro trips today.
We started the day by jumping on the nearest metro line and heading to the Grand Palace and National Museum in the Old District (this journey, from our hotel, actually took 2 metro lines and a boat).
Unfortunately we did not enter the Palace or the Museum. The Palace had a rip-off entry fee of 500bht per person ($17), of which Olly and I could not justify paying; being the foodies we are, and only having so much of our daily budget left for the day, we decided to spend it on a great dinner. Lol.
In regards to the Museum, sadly and naively we were inappropriately dressed.....never mind, next time.
With our morning plan failing rapidly, we brought lunch forward and headed to the Khoa San road; a backpackers heaven....apparently?! We thought the absolute opposite. Think 'The Hanover 2'. Think the street where they get wasted with Mr. Chow, go to a strip club and gets' half their face tattooed.
Picture it? Good. Well that's what it's like! In fact, that scene was filmed here, and it's exactly like the movie in real life...hell! Tattoo shops galore, s*** places to eat incl. all your favourite fast food dives; McD's, KFC, Subway. Dozens of hungover or already drunk 18-22somethings. An equal amount of locals pestering you to 'buy buy buy' / 'taxi taxi taxi' / 'tattoo tattoo tattoo'...... "Shut the front door!!!" Lol.
We were starving, so, if you can't beat them, join them. And that we did. Burger and chips (cringe) for 2 and a speedy taxi out of there and back to the hotel :)
Having endured that, the afternoon followed as so....nap nap nap !!!
Dinner was AWESOME! We met up with a Whistler friend!!! My Shelley love! We started with some beer appies, followed buy New Zealand Fish and Chips all-around; YUM E!!!!
Desert was Cocktails all-around on Shelley's hotel roof-top pool and bar. After catching up and laughing for several hours, it was the perfect nightcap to a perfect evening.
Loved seeing you Shelley!
