We had a lovely time in Kalmar with the final lunch together after an interesting guided tour of the castle. Thanks were given to the organisers and plans for next year discussed. With the rally boats moored together on the edge of Kalmar marina and being dressed overall, it was a fine sight and the happiness and friendliness were all much enjoyed. As a rally group we all got on really well together and the mix worked to the benefit of all. The small boats had never held us back and the bigger boats never rushed, evenings saw cockpits full of chatting groups enjoying a sundowner - we will miss that. A farewell supper on "Summer Star" was a fun evening and other crews came around to bid adieu over a glass or two.
Our departure at 0730 out into the relatively narrow channel between Oland and the mainland retraced the passage we had made a few days before. We had turned south and started to make our long way home, we pushed on hard under motor planning to get as far as Karlskrona, about 70nm but the weather forecasts suggested we could then be stuck for several days trying to get west from there. The harbour is some 5nm from the open sea, having to negotiate the channel out through the archipelago, and while not as far it was similar to Wismar where the conditions on the berth bore no resemblance to those at sea. We decided to go directly across the bay to Simrishamn making a passage of just over 100nm and we arrived after 13 hours at sea in quite a lot of wind and breaking seas.
However we are now here again and may be able to nip around to Ystad on Tuesday morning and then on in to The Danish islands where we earnestly hope we may some fine weather to enjoy them.
