Hi everyone! Very sorry that it has taken us sooo long to write this next blog. We have ummed and aahed about putting it on becuase it will be such an incredibly boring read that we wouldn't want you to be put off reading our future blogs! But anyway...here goes!
We arrived in Sabah on Saturday night at about 11pm and were picked up from the airport and taken to our hostel. We contemplated going out as it was St. Patricks Day... but our tiredness overruled and we went straight to beddy byes! Already the fun had started!!
We awoke the next morning and decided to head off in search of one of the small islands surrounding Sabah. We made our way down to the ferry port and when we got there... nothing! Except some silly little men trying to sell us a ferry ride over to the nearest island for about 12 million pounds. We said no and decided to go shopping. Our shopping trip was very successful and we walked away with some shower gel and some hair grips. When we stepped back onto the street it was raining. Alot. So we decided to go home. We got back to the hostel at about 4pm, watched the TV for about 7 hours and then went to bed. The end of a fantastically riveting day!
On day two, we were determined to get up early and find a nice beach so we could get started on our tans. The really (un)helpful lady at reception told us which buses to get and where we could get them from. So we hopped on the bus and ended up in a strange place called Dongongarong which was a bit like the Bronx of Malaysia. Everywhere we looked there were hill billys yodelling, children stealing and men carrying axes stained with blood. It was like we had walked into a scene from 'The Hills Have Eyes'. A young boy of no more than 5 actually physically got down on his hands and knees when we walked past to look up our skirts. We thought it best we leave. So we got back on a bus and headed straight back to the hostel. Some darn b*****s were already watching the TV so we decided, as the computer was free, that we would have a five minute play. This five minute play turned into seven hours and we only actually got up when someone asked us if they could have a go. Then we went to bed.
The next day we though we should try and do at least one interesting thing so we set off again for the ferry port and went on a mad hunt for a genuine ferry to take us to one of the islands. Finally we found one and we set off for Sapi Island. We decided to rent some snorkels as apparaently Sapi Island had good reefs. The guide on our boat said he would show us where was good to go snorkelling so once we stepped off the boat we thought he would point us in the right direction and then leave us. But no. He actually just sat by us. And sat. After a while we realised he wasn't leaving so we asked him to take us to the good coral. He lead the way and we climbed over mountains of slippery rocks and crab filled waters to a small beach on the other side of the island. We got a bit worried that he would steal our stuff so we decided it would be better if two of us went snorkelling at one time whilst the other one looked after our bags. First of all Martha and Laura went, along with the guide. Martha, who is not to keen on sea water and fish life, got a bit scred at the floating sponges on the bottom of the water and so decided she wanted to head back. She started to do this and Laura realised she would be left alone with the guide which she did not want so we all started to swim back. Suddenly, our guide plucked a long, squidgy, black sausage shaped thing out of the water and started waving it frantically in our faces. They got a wee bit scared, especially Martha who thought it was a huge leech. Finally they got back to shore, unhurt by the black sausage which turned out to be a sea cucumber and Nyima took Martha's place. They swam out extremely far and saw an array of mystical creatures. Green and blue starfish - which they held...and then found out they were poisonous. Whoopsie! And coral that was so big they could stand on it and be practically waist high above the water, even though they were about 100 metres out!
After they had got back to shore our guide left us in peace (finally) and we sat on the beach for a while, even though the sun was nowhere to be seen and black clouds were slowly filling up the sky. Just before we got up to leave we realised our guide had left his wallet on sunglasses next to us, so we stole them! We headed back over the mini mountain range and slipped many a time on the rocks before reaching the boat. We got back on and were taken back to mainland Sabah where our guide was eagerly awaiting out return with the hope that we had brought his wallet and sunglasses with us. We told him we hadn't and that we had seen them and then thrown them in the sea. He got very scared and climbed back into the boat asking the driver to take him back to the island. We were going to let him go but then his worried little face creeped into our conscience and we returned his belongings safely into his arms! We headed back to the hostel.. very excited that tomorrow we would finally be leaving!
On our last night we only spent a minimal 3 hours on the computer and an even smaller 2 hours watching TV. Our next location is Sibu island which we accidentally stumbled accross whilst searching for things to do on Sapi Island. Sibu Island is small island off the coast of Johor Bahru in Malaysia and so we booked our flight to fly into JB where the lovely owner of the resort on Sibu Island said she would arrange transport for us. We will update you from there soon!! Bye! x x x
