At this moment in time we are a wee bit angry as we wrote our WHOLE entire blog for KL and then the bloody computer deleted it so now we have to write it again. But anyway, here goes...
Let us explain our horrific journey here. We got over the border with only one minor problem. Guess who it was? Good old Laura strikes again! She had thrown away that morning a vital bit of paper that would have allowed her straight into Malaysia... so she wasn't allowed through. An armed guard took her into a small room to question her on her intentions in Malaysia and what she had done with the bit of paper. After an intense 2 minutes of probing she was allowed free and she stepped over the border to meet Martha and Nyima.
We found a bus that would take us directly to Kuala Lumpur and happily we stepped onto the roomy, air-conned coach and headed to our usual position at the back. Bad idea! Ten minutes into our journey we noticed that the coach appeared to have something wrong with its suspension. The roads ahead were straight and smooth but there was us at the back having the most uncomfortable journey. We were bouncing around all over the place like we were on an old rickety chicken cart going down a pot-holed, cobbled street! Our poor arms were rigid and tense trying to hold our books still in front of our faces and sleep was most definately out of the question! Still we endured this pain for 5 hours and eventually we reached our destination! We were pounced on by approximately 72,349 taxi drivers as soon as we stepped off the coach all offering us our journey to the hostel for 20 ringitts or more. Luckily we ignored the b*****s and after a two minute walk down the road, we found our hostel shining brightly before us!
The hostel is like a mini hotel and our air-conned, private room, 24 hour free breakfast and internet and a DVD collection to rival Blockbusters cost us a measly 5 pounds a night! Needless to say, we spent that night eating lots of toast and watching many a DVD.
The following day we ventured to the Twin Towers in KL... they are the tallest twin towers in the world and you can see them in the picture that is on this page. We spent the morning doing a bit of shopping and in the afternoon we took a trip up to floor 41 to cross the bridge that joins the two towers together. It wasn't even half way up but we still got serious vertigo issues! In the evening we went to the cinema inside the twin towers to watch Ghost Rider and it was probably one of the worst experiences of our lives! Not only was the film a complete disgrace that Nicholas Cage should be extremely embarrassed about but we had to spend the entire film in Arctic conditions as the room had air-con and we had nothing but shorts and t-shirts to cover our goose-pimpled bodies! We returned to the hostel and decided to make up for the crapness of Ghost Rider by watching The Notebook (at which Nyima cried like a baby) and Eurotrip (at which we cried with laughter... especially as we were watching it with a German man - if you have seen it you will understand!).
The next day we went to have a look round the Malaysian campus of Nottingham Uni which is based just outside of KL, as Nyima will be spending her second year here. Luckily we bumped into an English guy who is doing the same course as Nyima and he showed us around. Nyima took front place on the tour whilst Laura and Martha waddled behind, sweating buckets due to the intense heat, and nearly fainting at the immense walk to the sports pavilion, where the outdoor pool suddenly looked very inviting!
That night we went to China Town and had a top class meal at the total cost of 4 pounds each! We chose this specific restaurant because there were numerous Western groups also enjoying their meals and there was also a young three piece band playing some classics by The Beatles and The Monkees just by it. After the meal we waded through literally thousands of stalls offering items ranging from 'Adidogs' t-shirts to 'Rolecks' watches and we eventually stumbled across a Reggae bar where drinks for females were just 80p! So we were surprised to find we were some of the very few females in there, and there were a whole lot of Western boys! Woo Hoo! We spent the evening chatting up the boys and being whipped at pool!
On Saturday morning we went to Batu caves which is a group of caves just outside of KL. We successfully climbed the 272 steps into the cave and dodged the supposedly wild monkeys... who actually just timidly ate peanuts and drank fizzy drinks from cans. When we got up there it really wasn't worth the trauma of climbing up the stairs and nearly falling back down from fatigue! It was just a large cavern with an Indian shrine inside. However, we later found out that we didn't actually go INTO the caves. Apparently there was a small opening that took you right into the heart of the caves but some of the tunnels were no bigger than a thumbnail... so actually we were quite glad we did not venture any furthur!
In the afternoon we went to Times Square, which is a HUGE 14 storey mall with everything from shops to a theme park inside! Feeling like we hadn't already watched enough films, what with unlimited films at the hostel and on the planes, we decided to go to the IMAX 3D cinema and watch another one. We watched Open Season in 3D and it was sooo much better than Ghost Rider even though it was a cartoon about a bear trying to find its way back to its owner after she leaves him in the wild, with the help of his one antlered deer friend. After the film we went into the theme park. We went on Asia's Biggest Indoor Rollercoaster a few times and Dizzy Lizzy which was a 5 hour long bobbing roundabout. Nyima said she enjoyed that ride the most and even came off it feeling a little queasy! Martha and Laura also went on DNA Mixer which threw us around so much that our legs ended up coming out of our ears. Martha even let out a little wee and snot came out her nose becuase she was laughing so much as Laura was making a noise that roughly resembled an old, decrepid and dying walrus.
That night we ventured to a place known as Beach Club and unfortunately we found ourselves in the same situation as Beppu. We were again the ONLY females in the whole entire club that were not ladies of the night... and all the men in there were dirty old perverts. And the drinks cost a bloody fortune so we decided to leave and head home to watch another DVD!
On Sunday we met up with Andrew, a friend of Nyima's dad. He, along with his wife, Joyce, and adorable son, Jonathon, took us to Kuala Serangor, a little village about a 2 hour drive from KL. We had a meal sat on the river's edge and watched the sunset over the palm oil trees. It was very beautiful. After dinner Andrew took us to a Firefly Park. We were taken down the stream in a little boat and saw thousands of fireflys lighting up bushes along the way. It was just like Christmas all over again! Laura caught one for Jonathon and he kept it in his hands for the entire journey, determined that he was going to keep it in a jar when he got home! However, when we got back to the platform he opened his hands to let it go, but the poor little things light had burnt out! On the journey home we thought Jonathon would be tired and sleep but he was so hyper! We started a conversation about the fabulous Mr. Bean and it lasted the entire journey home! It turns out Jonathon is a big fan and he explained just about every Mr. Bean episode to us in complete gibberish as he was so excited the words just seemed to merge together! We only knew he was still talking about Mr. Bean bcause we occasionally heard his name through the gibberish! He was so cute!
We got talking to Joyce and Andrew and we have decided, with their help, to change our route up Malaysia. Originally we were going to go up the West Coast and visit all of the touristy resorts like Penang and Langkawi but now we have completely changed our mind! We have decided to fly to the Malaysian part of Borneo tomorrow (Tuesday) and spend about 2 weeks travelling from Kuching in Sarawak to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. During this time we hope to spend 2 nights with a tribe in a long house, really just living their life and doing what they do. This does mean eating their food which is basically whatever they catch in the rainforest that day - it could be wild boar, squirrel or even spider! We are also planing to head into the mountains to visit an orang utan sanctuary where we can feed them, play with them and hold them - which will be absolutely amazing! And we also plan to get started on our sunbathing on our own private beach! We will keep you updated on our whereabouts and try and add pictures as soon as possible! Sorry there hasn't been any for a while - we just can't find a computer that works properly! Also, thank you for all your messages... keep them coming!
Bye for now x x x
