The train down to Berlin was fine, we initially sat on a four person table before realising these were all reserved, so we moved to two doubles. James and will fell asleep and I amused myself for a while by listening to the conversation of the pair of girls sat behind us. After arriving at Berlin Hauptbahnhoff about 9 we had a bit of a challenge trying to figure out how to get to the hostel, Baxpax Kreuzberg, which we eventually figured out was outside Gorlitzer Bahnhoff and we could get the metro there. Upon exiting the station, we were immediately met by a group of black guys trying to sell is weed who, as we discovered, would continue to do this every time we went in or out of the station. Through a slightly dodgy alley and up a set of stairs we found the hostel, which actually turned out to be really nice. As we were checking in we were greeted by this slightly nuts chatty guy from Melbourne, and we then found we were in the Polish themed room, as each room was themed (mostly with paint and a flag or two) after a particular country. We then headed to a Mexican place, Que Pasa, where I had a wonderful Burrito and a sex on the beach before heading back to the hostel. The thing that strikes me about this hostel is it's friendliness. There's a great cheap bar which everyone talks around and I met loads of people just chatting at the bar. I met a couple more random girls from Melbourne, a pair of English girls who were uni students from Surrey, a few guys from Newcastle and a pair of Dutch sisters. We also met some people in our room, some Italians who didn't speak very much English and an Australian couple driving round Europe who were again from Melbourne. The next morning we took the train to Alexandrplatz where we found the enormous TV tower there is too expensive for us to go in and climb at €13.50, so we walked down the long road that goes over museum island towards the Brandenburg Gate. We went into the Berliner Dom, a magnificent cathedral on museum island which you can climb right to the top of and have some magnificent views all around Berlin. We then had lunch at a reasonably cheap Italian place and wandered down through the Brandenburg Gate and then sat in front of the Reichstag, which is very impressive. We then headed back to Berlin Hauptbahnhoff to pick up Rob and then back to the hostel. The others went to sleep in our new room (the Swiss one) and I talked for a while to an Australian called Alex and play a game of pool with a Romanian called Adi. After the others have woken up we play a game of pool with Adi and the barman (which we of course lose) and then we realise there's a girl crying in our room with her friend with her so we decide to leave them to it and head out to supper again, in Que Pasa. When we get back, the girls seemed to have calmed down a little so we have a chat and it turns out they're from Helsinki, Finland and one of them had just gone slightly too hard and the come down was difficult, but she was ok now. We head out to a bar for a couple of drinks before coming back and I talk to Alex some more. As the others go to bed we decide to watch The Beach, which starts well but gets a bit weird. Speaking to Alex and the Finnish girls, it seems going out is done a bit differently by a lot of people in Berlin. Firstly, the clubs are really strict, they will often turn you away for seemingly no reason or just make up a reason, especially if you're a group of guys. Secondly, the queues are often 3 hours long, and thirdly it all happens really late. The Finnish girls claimed best party in Berlin starts 9am on a Sunday morning at clubs like Berghaim Magdalea and Watergate, and Alex said that when she went out Saturday night she didn't leave until 5am and got back at 2pm. The next morning we took the train to Checkpoint Charlie and then walked to the holocaust memorial before having lunch in the Tiergarten. In the afternoon we went to the Berlin Wall memorial before heading back to the hostel. That evening, we went out to find a German restaurant, but we're pretty unsuccessful and ended up back in Que Pasa again. Back at the hostel, I joined some people who had been playing a drinking game and met a load of new people. An American girl who was an artist from Detroit, a guy from Vancouver, some more guys from Newcastle, a girl from Canada, a guy from Austria, one from France and a girl called Liese from Holland. Rob and I decided to go to a bar with them while James and Will stayed back as wills throat was getting pretty bad. The next morning, we checked out quickly and booked the next hostel for Prague, although we're not quite sure if it went through or not. After being pestered one last time by the weed dealers, we headed off to the station.
