Today we planned to visit the American Museum of Natural History- best known for the 'Night at the Museum' movies!! Now I am not much of a movie buff or anything, but I do love this movie and must admit I was quite excited about seeing where the film was set as well as finding some of the characters from the film! We headed through Central Park for a 'morning stroll' to get to the museum and once we arrived we were amazed by the beautiful building- a lot bigger than I thought and not situated the way I imagined from the movie!
Soo much to see from the animals, dinosaur skeletons, a ocean room, the universe and other various American exhibits! I saw Dum Dum from the movie (the taking statue that's always wants gum!) as well as Rex the T Rex from the movie so that was really good!!
We also saw an exhibition called dark universe which is set in a cinema type setting but the screen is on the ceiling in a bid dome shape. It was all about the making of the universe so there were beautiful stars flying all around you all the while. Was really cool to watch! Must admit I didnt understand much of it and got a little lost halfway through but it was still a great experience!! All I kept thinking about was The big bang theory!! ha ha!
I also went to a shark exhibit in the 3D IMAX- was mainly about the great whites. It really good and I actually learnt something! It wqas about all these divers who were diving with the sharks, showing you all thier behavior and how to act around them and not get eaten. I would like to think if I am ever in the water with the shark I might have hal;f a chance now!!
There was also a 'Spiders Alive' exhibit which Amy, Owen & myself went to as the grown ups werent brave enough!! They had all kind of spid4ers from all over the world there that you could look at and learn about. Oh my god, they had a bird eating spider was as big as my hand! I thought I had seem some of the biggest spiders in the world after visiting Australia but this one even shocked me!! We stayed for the interactive session where we learned about the red-kneed tarantula and scorpions before Owen went to play on the giant spider for the kids!!
In the evening we jumped on the subway and headed downtown to Times Square which, was, amazing! All the lights and screens everywhere, you don't know where to look first!! There were cartoon characters wandering everywhere ready for pictures (and tips!). We were looking around some of the famous stores based there- including a trip to Toys r us (had to be done!!) They have their own Ferris wheel... Yeah. Enough said!! Not only that, they had a life size T. Rex from Jurassic Park, massive Lego statues of the Empire State Bulidng and the Staue of Liberty just to name a few!! Got to say I didn't want to leave- great to be a big kid!! (with a little kid as an excuse!)
Whilst in Times Square we went for dinner at Planet Hollywood, great American diner, with massive portions. (Again) I went for a Chicken burger and neither myslef or Greg managed the whole thing! Was great to have dinner altogether though and catch up on the events of the last two years, even though it didnt feel like half that long!! After dinner we wandered around soaking up the atmosphere of Times Square and looking round some of the world famous shops before heading home for some well earned rest!!
