So today was our first day in the big apple!! All of us a little jet lagged and not with it we managed to pull oursleves together and get ready t go exploring!!
After Myself, Karen, Annette, Greg, Amy and Owen had a little catch up, (felt like I saw them all yesterday) we headed out into the city. Our first impressions were thrown off a little when we walked around the corner to see thousands of protesters taking over the street of New York! The roads had all been closed and there were people everywhere, dressed up with signs and banners, chanting...you name it!! As we battled through the crowds of people we finally made it out the other side into the safety net of Central Park! I had heard so much about central park over the years, but the image I had in my head did not do it any kind of justice!! This place was MASSIVE!! It was like a national park within a city- never known anything like it!! Joggers and walkers everywhere with people speeding past on bikes! Along with horse drawn carriages everywhere if you wanted that 'romantic' central park ride!! (and can handle the smell!) It felt like you have walked into Narnia through the wardrobe or something! One minute your in the middle of the busy and noisy city and 2 minutes later your in this quiet park without a care in the world!! Was kind of a wierd feeling!!
Once we made our way through the park in the direction we were headed we arrived in Columbus Cirlce to more protesting! (It was really more like a parade!) With all the streets closed off we had to detour a little to get where we needed to be but that was nice as we got to see places we may not have seen before!
Eventually we made it to meet Gregs school friend Paul for brunch at Rue 57 at West 57 and Avenue of Americans. I had a lovely breakfast of eggs florentine, which unsurprisingly I couldn't finish due to the sheer portion size!! We all went for an all american brunch, Annette having a bagel and Owen and Amy having waffles! During brunch we had a great view of the climate march going past. Apparently there was about 310,000 people protesting, which explained how it took over most of the city!!
After brunch we headed to Pauls place for tea which had an amazing view overlooking Central Park- still can't believe the size of it! 100 acres of green in the middle of the city with the skyscrapers perfectly formed around the outside! After a very civilised cup of tea we headed back into Central Park in the hope of finding the best features (other than the park itself of course!)
We covered about half of it that afternoon, finding Belvedere castle which was overlooking a lake and a snippit of the skyline. We also found the ramble, the great lawn and the turtle pond. Im not sure how this turtle pond came about but there were hundreds of them- all in thier own pond in the middle of the park. Very cute!
After I dont know how many miles of walking we headed back to the hotel, legs exhausted from the days activities!! We spent the eveing in the hotel catching up and planning the rest of the weeks activities with a coldie in hand!! Ready for the events of tomorrow.... Xx
