We woke up relatively early to make the most of our last full day in Barcelona. After a quick coffee and croissant, we jumped straight on the open-air bus tour. And what a perfect day it was to do it - it was blue skies and sunshine all day (the best weather we've had yet in Barcelona). We hopped off at La Sagrada Familia to check out the church from the inside this time. As I walked around and around the outside of the Basilica trying to find the end of the queue, it occurred to me that every tourist in Barcelona must have had the same idea today! We passed the hour of queueing away by chatting to a lovely American family that were ahead of us in line - it certainly helped keep my mind off the wait and the heat.
As I finally walked into the grand basilica, I was certainly not prepared for what greeted me on the other side! It was simply the most beautiful church I'd ever seen. Every photo I took could not do justice to the vibrancy of colours in the stained glass windows or the detail of the intricately designed ceilings or columns. We spent over an hour walking around with our audio guides learning about Gaudi's obsession before taking the lift up to the top of one of the towers to enjoy the views of Barcelona. The walk back down the winding staircase was interesting, with no internal railing and a 50m drop to the bottom...we definitely took our time getting down!
After a couple of quick sandwiches for lunch, we jumped back on the bus and saw a few more of Gaudi's creations, the Barcelona football club, the Olympic stadium, the old and new ports, and a number of museums.
As the sun was still shining, we decided to jump off the bus near the beach and grab some tapas and drinks overlooking the water. We then had a romantic stroll on the esplanade at dusk before heading back to the hotel for our last meal - which ironically was gourmet Chinese. Unfortunately, I hate to admit that it was my best meal in Spain - go figure!!
