Walkies for coca cola. . .
6.30 rise.
Breakfast, where I had the local oatmeal, yum yum yummy, may look like diahorea, but mixed with fruit and about 4bowls later decided this would be enought energy to keep me going. I later found out this stuff is made with millet, crushed biscuits, milk and sugar, oh so nutritious.
Pack, where I decided to hire gloves, stephan kept on about getting poles but I had made the decision that two pairs of gloves was the only necessary equipment I needed and we were all ready to go go go. Except the go go go bit was very slow slow slow.
After a rather extended bus journey to marangu gate, the coca cola route, with stops for water, money and randomness and a short wait once inside the gate we embarked our first steps up mount Kilimanjaro.
Forest to begin and entenza our guide kept shouting vicky poly poly why you running. So through the forest we walked which was nice, and we encountered a little bit of rain of course. It reminded of forest walks I would go on as a kid with the parentals of my own or clifford and linda with me, cat, michael and david squashed in the back of one car. So a basic dirt trail with tree roots to trip over and ant paths, with rocks and pebbles. Towering trees twisting on each side with the occasional mini waterfall.
We had been given pack lunches which as we find consists of boiled eggs everyday, I have pleasure of two with being veggie. These eggs get donated to a member of the family and the left over bits to the porters. Today the family member was shermin, I dread to think how many he ate or the aroma his farts later that day had, poor rox.
Once we reached our hut, Marango hut, which is a dorm style cement box, the three couples had a dorm and stephan and me went in the next one sharing with two other groups.
We walked to a higher altitude and walked round a crater and headed back down. This also is part of our next few days daily routine, its on my to google list, not sure if its to help you aclimatise better as you go slightly higher, couple hundred metres or so then sleep at a lower altitude, or whether its a mental placebo affect of I've been higher I can go higher tomorrow. Also on the to google list is apparently smokers acclimatise better as their body already copes with less oxygen but then they are dealing with even less, so I need to look into this.
Had our first of the standard three course evening meal, soup, veg(also meat dishes and rice or pasta etc) and fruit and plenty cups of tea. The competition began for who had the most hits of the toilet during the night. Bets were on me as I maybe known for peeing in the bushes on occasions. Xx
