Day 13,17 July 2012, Kande Beach, Lake Malawi - On arrival at Kande beach last night, after 7 hours of African massage in the back of the truck, we descended on the most surreal place - a fresh water lake in the middle of nowhere, it is huge (Africa's third biggest lake). We were all honour bound to rush in as fast as we humanly could. After an hour or so of paddling around and peering at the fish at our feet, it was time to get out and explore the necessities - laundry, cafe, internet and off course, the bar. The lodge is in a beautiful setting, with huts made out of chunks of hand hewn stone, mortared together and roofed with thatch. Our bed is a four poster made out of natural wood and is so cool, so Africa, (see piccies). We spent the evening drinking locally made brandy (that would be Gold Label and not "Malawi Gold" which is something locally grown, highly illegal and very different). We mixed our brandy with sparkling water bought at the Shoprite in Lilongwe (Africa's answer to Coles). Never let it be said that we don't support local farmers - we also bought a kilo of the sweetest strawberries from a street vendor for 600 Malawi Kwacha - or about $2 - which we then scarfed down to keep us going until lunch. We slept well despite wild and woolly winds that sprang up overnight and awoke to the sound of surf pounding the lakeshore - quite amazing given that it was as calm as a swimming pool yesterday evening. Dinner was dinner but we, the great white hunters, headed for the cafe afterwards and discovered home made vanilla ice-cream - the first since leaving Sydney. (Yippee!) Today, diving is scheduled for just as soon as Justin from the Aquanuts dive shop can get his boat in the water - could be a sunset dive - James's underwater camera might get christened this evening.
