Third weekend in town & we made the decision to try some of the tourist stuff which so far we've ignored on the basis that we now live here. After studying the multitude of guide books shipped over from UK, we settled on visiting Jim Thomson's house which is easily found as it's just a stone's throw from National Stadium BTS Station. As we set off nice & early (leaving the apartment on the crack of 11am), the short ride on the BTS meant that we arrived at Siam station in the peak of the Saturday rush.Following last week's visit to monster which is the MBK mall, we knew that it was possible to walk on the walkways above the street level chaos the short distance to National Stadium Station.Dropping down to street level and from studying the map we headed off looking for the right Soi.After only a few minutes walking in the rapidly warming mid-day sun, we turned right up the Soi & headed down the nondescript street towards our target. At the end of the street, which looked like any other in the city, you turned to an oasis of calm & tranquillity. For those of you asking who is Jim Thomson? He was an America architect who came to Thailand just as WW2 was ending and liked the place so much he stayed put. What made his name (and fortune) was the revival he created in traditional Thai silk production. As a result of his efforts the silks he helped source sprang to world fame when they were featured in the musical 'The King & I'.But back to his house. As an architect, he set about creating a fusion of Traditional Thai and Western influences in his home in Bangkok by moving 6 traditional Thai houses from the rural north to the city and creating a paradise within the city.Having visited the tranquil place he certainly achieved his goal. After a guided tour explaining the origins of the house & the numerous artefacts he collected over his life (some many centuries old), we sat down to lunch in the cafe attached to the house. It is safe to say that one of us had an enjoyable lunch whereas the other one spent most of it admiring the inside of the toilets. That's right folks, my first blog ended with the immortal words '3 days in and still haven't got sick yet'well for the past 10 days I've had a dose of Bangkok Belly. But Jim Thomson's house was well worth the 200 Baht entrance fee and a very pleasant way to kill a few hours in this crowded city.If you plan a visit, take note of the guide books & ignore any natives who tell you that the house is 'shut today and you should come with me for a shopping trip'.While making our way back to the BTS we spotted a bemused looking couple who were obviously looking for Mr Thomson's house. They had been told the story above & looked slightly disappointed until we assured them their goal was indeed open and only short walk down the Soi.As I said, I've been suffering for the past week with a dose of Bangkok Belly. It's put a bit of a downer on the weekend's activities as I've not been in the mood for much except trying to get out of the apartment. It makes it particularly hard as there are so many restaurants to visit. While Charlotte likes 3 square meals a day, I've been managing to get by on a bowl of cereal and the odd bottle of water. Not a good combination.A short comment about work, still going & still finding the differences between London & Bangkok.Managed to get hold of a work permit and bank account last week, so we're now legal up to the end of April when I have to go back & extend both the visa & the work permit.I should be able to put in a full 5 days in the lab this week as there are no distractions planned. Looking forward to getting some proper work done & making some progress with finding how we can help the guys in the lab in their everyday issues.Well, that's all for now folks, this epic must come to an end (it's getting late & I have to go to work tomorrow).Still having fun out here & bring on the next week.
