The last two days were a loss; Wednesday night a stomach virus put me out of commission for two days. Russ and I had to miss Corbett National Park while I slept twenty hours a day. Upright but still tentative, we left Ramnagar and headed up into the Himalayan foothills toward Nainital, into some stands of pines, through towns and roadside shrines. Even though we started with sun, the fog kept overtaking us each time we'd stop to walk a side path off the road. At one point we were above the clouds with a magical view down the valley. In spite of the conditions we found some nice birds:
- A Black-headed Jay quickly seen before obscured by the fog; black face with spiky crest, black and white streaked throat, pinkish body, blue barred wings and tail.
- Rufous-breasted Accentor - sparrow-size with a bright rust breast and striking black/white/rust lines throughout the face
Our destination tonight is Nainital, a popular tourist and wedding destination with lots of hotels, nestled in the mountains. Once we reached the outskirts of the city, we transferred from our bus into small vehicles to reach the hotel. The streets of Nainital are too narrow for the bus. Our hotel, the Vikram Vintage Inn at 6800' is a bit chilly, but the room is small and the space heater and extra blanket on the bed should help tonight.
