Today I joined the "eat-the-world" tour of Berlin - Friedrichshain area which is a 3 hour walking culture and food tour. It was a small group led by an Australian lady from Sydney who has been resident in Berlin for 17 years and lives in this area.
Friedrichshain is an area which was part of the former East Berlin and has an interesting past during the communist era. The area is gradually being upgraded and gentrified and investors have moved in to convert former squats to modern expensive apartments. The food culture in the area is varied including Polish, Syrian, French, Austrian, Bulgarian as well as some German and modern healthy options. We tasted about 8 samples including savory and sweet which were all delicious.
I then walked down to the East Side Gallery as most of you will know is the old wall which is now available for graffiti artists. After that I joined the Hop On bus tour and did one of the three loops - balance to do tomorrow.
Berlin is a young peoples' city - average age is in the 30s I was told so there is a very young vibe and energy. Many parts of the city are still old and poorly maintained but there is a lot of action including extending the tram routes which is currently causing traffic havoc in the city.
I am doing about 3-4 hours of walking a day which means I am pretty tired by 6 or 7pm when I get home so evenings are quiet.
