Stopped in Mississippi Mills where we were supposed to have booked an Airbnb……. door was open when we arrived but nobody was home???? Met the neighbours and they let us use their phone to call our host Elena. Turned out she was in Ottawa….. she decided to come our way and the neighbours decided they wanted to get to know us…. we literally ended up at their doorstep with beer and cocktails. Not a bad place to be, eh?
Elena arrived and made sure we could use here apartment. We did our groceries and got some beer. Had a bite to eat on our way back and the neighbours decided to have a bonfire in their backyard with a couple of other people. We ended up having a great evening with beer and marshmallows':-)
During the day however, we visited quit a few small towns and the Bonnechere caves in Eganville. The caves were discovered around 1853. A guy named Tom explored them in the fifties. He was quite a daredevil and ended up buying the land and preserved the caves. The caves opened for the public in 1955. There are mostly a great source for all sorts of fossils.
There are a few old towns around here so we drove from town to town. Everywhere a different story to be found. When you're a horse lover you should visit Perth and I don't mean the one in Australia….. Perth was the home of a remarkable horse, a Belgium warmblood, called Big Ben…. Yeah, yeah still in Perth they are quite international orientated and can't seem to decide where they belong…. Perth, Big Ben, Belgium….. it's still Ontario, Canada…. anyway the horse won many prizes in all sorts of races. It must have been quite a sight. Big Ben is one of the two animals who ever ended up in the Sports Hall of Fame. They also have a cheese history so maybe they wanted to put some Swiss thing in the equation to?
We had planned to go to Ottawa today but this morning around nine we stepped outside and it was already 26 degrees…. hot, hot, hot…….change of plans….. we could either go swimming or visit a forest or something because out in the sun……. it is not a happy place……. Heidi found the perfect spot for us to visit…. The Lady's slipper Orchids at Purdon conservation area…… a forest of orchids… never seen it but definitely interested. Although Heidi suggested the forest and loves orchids I'm not really sure that was the reason… I mean she should be driving the Paris-Dakar….. Don't know what happened but she's all over the place with that Jeep…. Really taking it to another level…… paved roads??? Hell no! Off road driving is the new way to go…. So when you don't hear from us in a while she probably took us to a very remote place where the only way to go is to use the high & low gear to get up and down the hills…. and we don't have wifi…. We've created a monster:-)
