495 North, on the bus to Littleton, time on my hands to start writing….. So when you're on the plane, during take-off and you hear a big bang followed by electric light shocks you're not that happy. Ohhhh, the captain says…. We just got struck by lightning on the nose, no worries we'll get there. That's how the trip started. Adventure as promised! To get to Boston we did have to pay a visit to immigration but we got permission to stay until March 12th next year! Because of this hold up we didn't make our connecting flight in Dublin and got transferred to the late afternoon flight. Got our self some sandwiches and a Coors light. All good! Once in Boston we noticed that our luggage was taking it's time….. actually a little bit more than that. Our luggage wasn't arriving at all. Barbara came to our rescue. As an Aer Lingus flight experience attendant she knew exactly what to do and where to go. Two days later our luggage arrived. Just in time to catch the bus to Littleton. Let's rewind a little bit because we did spend two days in Boston…..
Boston is a great city to wander about. For American standards this is a walkable city and that makes it extra special. There's a lot of history here. The American Revolution started here in 1870, think about the Boston tea party December 16th 1773 which started it all….. The underground railway was a part of Boston during the revolution and several black and white abolitionist put their mark on Boston during this time. To really get a feel for what happened here you just take the Freedom trail.
It's hard to keep on walking, everywhere are terraces, little pubs, squares, small relaxing gardens and of course the parks in the city, which are great. Don't forget that Boston is the home of Harvard University and I just had to visit this epic place. Harvard is not just any university, it's where John Adams, JFK, Barack Obama and loads of other presidents of the US graduated. Also Ralph Waldo Emerson and Bill Gates went here. The list is just too long to summarize. When we were walking the grounds we had the pleasure of meeting police officer John. We got to talking and ended up getting a private tour of Harvard where he would get on his bike, ride in front of us and showed us the spots. Thanks Officer John, we had a blast!
You can't get in any of the actual buildings but there's one exception…… the science building. We were told that in the entrance hall we would find the world's first computer. Well, it was definitely not possible to miss that as it took up an entire wall!
Boston is a great place to be. The people are hardworking, friendly and outgoing. You'll ease in and feel at home the moment you get here. As home of the Red Sox I couldn't resist. Yesterday we went to the ballgame, got myself a foam finger and had a hell of a time. The atmosphere is great, families, friends, just by yourself…. It doesn't matter. Everybody cheers, sings a long and participate in all the odd entertainment between breaks. Just hilarious.
Now we are on our way to Littleton where we will meet our first host family. They live about 15 minute's north of Waterford and we will be spending a couple of weeks at their place. We'll keep you posted!
