Now At Aguas Calientes beside a river and a railway line, hemmed in by mountains. No roads here except to transport tourists by bus up to Machu Picchu. We are having the one evening to recover from the Inca Trail.
This was truely an amazing experience. The trail climbed up 1000´s of steps to 4000 metres. The scenery was always breathtaking with layers of mountains at the skyline.
Visits to other Inca sites along the way reinforced the wonder of this race of people and culminated in the city of Machu Picchu. Largest and spectacular however each visit to other sites had been spectacular for different reasons.
We travelled with 16 others and all got on well. The porters were amazing the loads they carried were limited to 25kg and at times they ran on ahead to set up camp or cook lunch or prepare morning tea. Each meal was 3 courses, including breakfast. I found the whole porter thing almost obscene however this is the only way the Peruvian Govt will allow people to walk the traill now and the porters didnt seem to be complaining. Nev and I were one of the few couples who carried all our own gear (you could hire a porter to take everything if you wanted and just walk with raincoat and camera). We were also 2 of 5 (out of 16) who climbed Wannapicchu. That was an awesomely aweful completion to the trail with clambering down what can only be described as a rock ladder with about 200 steps. Horrifying.
