We had two good days in Santiago, a city that was similar to Adelaide in that it was on the coast, flat and bordered by the Andes lowlands. Weather was hot and Jaquaranda and Silky Oak in flower very much like Adelaide Springtime. We stayed at a homestay and arrived at 12.30 am. Had trouble getting the 3 keys to unlock the 3 door locks and was surprised to have the door opened from the inside. Jose was home. He was a hoarder and every spare space was covered in a collection of some kind. He was nice enough but we joked about Jose Hoarders Homestay and as he had a large collection of travel books but had never travelled, wondered if he popped off tourists.
The Pre-Columbian museum was a highlight with objects of art dating back 6000 years
Short flight took us to Porto Montt. Lush green countryside and wooden buildings, we feel like we are in a totally different country. Cooler too and lots of warm woollens for sale indicate we are heading for cooler climes. We catch the Navimag boat tomorrow and are 4 days travelling down the coast so out of touch again.
Had a great night at a pub last night. No one starts eating here until about 9.00 p.m. The local TV had the Chile Vs NZ Womens Hockey Game on and with 3 NZérs we cheered loudly for the winning team. The locals made us very welcome with free Pisco Sour shots for the men and then two guys came to our table and performed the most amazing card tricks. Having Peter speaking fluent Spanish is very helpful as the locals are very impressed by that.
