We travelled by bus yesterday (19/7) to Papallacta, which is about 2 hours from Quito, and is famous for its hot springs. Bus journey fine but we were lucky enough to have a seat, a few didn´t. The weather was quite hot and sticky in Quito but it changed as we drove up to an even higher altitude and the cloud seemed very low, but really we are just high up. Drizzly rain here but that did not stop us enjoying a good soak in the pools which are dotted around the hotel grounds. Very, very relaxing! :-) We ate in the evening at the restaurant, most people had trout as it´s a local speciality, caught in the near by rivers. Was worried I´d not like it, but it was nice and not too many bones! I also had empanadas, a typical south american snack. I got an early night as was shattered, asleep by 9.30 but awake almost hourly from 2am onwards, eventually giving up trying to sleep at about 5! :-( It seems headaches and insominia are sypmtoms of being at high altitude, but it could also be jet lag. I will be going for a hot stone massage and relexology masage this morning, then I might try and get an hours sleep before we set off for Tena (3.5 hours) , to go to the jungle. We will be in a local family homestay for 2 nights before going to a jungle lodge. All in all 4 days in the jungle I think, which should be good. I have realised I maybe should be taking malaria tablets for there, rather than the other area I thought I needed them for...so think I´ll start today but smother myself in mosquito repellant too! It´s quite cold here, but I imagine it´s going to be hot in the jungle....I will probably be back on the internet after the time there. Hasta luego!
