On Wed 7th Dec I got the bus to Guayaquil from Guaranda- took about 4.5 hours and turned into a hot journey! As we left the mountains and headed south-east, the weather got noticeably warmer and a bit humid too. We were also travelling on straight roads, it seemed like a very long time since I'd done that! Also looking out the window and not seeing mountains and hills seemed a bit odd. Arrived at Guayaquil at about 3pm and decided I'd prefer to travel onward to the coast the following day so I got a taxi into Guayaquil, found a hotel, changed into my shorts (hot and humid there) and went for a wander. First stop was the park in the city which has land iguanas in it- they live there and just wander round the park- they are large iguanas and prehistoric-looking, similar to iguanas I had seen in the Galapagos. I thought there would be a couple but actually there are loads! After taking some pictures I walked down to the riverfront, the 'Malecon' which was a really nice area to have a wander. I got an icecream and walked along the riverfront, with the welcome breeze. Once it was getting dark I decided to find some food and return to my hotel- I decided to try the Ecuadorian fast food restaurant chain, the food was ok but not fast- I waited 30 minutes for them to bring me my food! Admittedly I only spent a few hours in Guayaquil but I liked the part that I saw of it and it was a nice place to spend a few hours and break the journey to the coast.
