Spent Saturday (21st) at the Otavalo markets- my third time visiting the markets (second time this trip) but this time I could shop as Mum could take things home for me! I was good though and didn't buy too much for myself, but did take the chance to buy gifts for the family as there are such lovely things here and as I said Mum could take it home. We started the day with a visit to the animal market then wandered around the normal market. Here in Ecuador people sell all sorts of things on the street (not just at market), often very random like TV remote controls or pencils! I always find it odd because I can't imagine thinking "oh yes I need a new TV control" when I am walking down the street! You could manage without going to actual shops in Ecuador given that the markets are always so good as well. We walked over a bridge in Otavalo which had people selling the following things: watches, pans, CDs, guinea pig roasters, jewellery, wooden spoons and other things that I can't remember! What a mixture of stuff.
We then went to the famous Otavalo craft market which is biggest on a Saturday We spent hours wandering and looking and then buying- I think we got back to the hostel at about 6 after having gone out at about 8.30! Sunday we took a trip to nearby Cotacachi where you can buy all things leather, there are loads of shops on this one street selling bags, purses, boots, coats. My mum got a handbag and I got one for my stepmum too who has always been jealous of the one I got last time I was here! Afterwards we went to Peguche to go and see how they do the weaving, but didn't walk to the waterfall as it was raining and a pretty miserable day weather-wise. We got a bus to Quito in the late afternoon and then a taxi to our hostel in the old town. Taxi driver ripped us off, and I was really annoyed with myself- I ALWAYS ask how much a journey will cost before I go anywhere but this one time I forgot and paid for it! Still it's the first time I've been really ripped off on the trip so far and worse things happen, it's just really annoying!

Issam Am so pleased to see these htpoos and to receive followup of student designated funds! I will post this on our Ecuador and Galapagos FB page as well. Last summer's students LOVED visiting Chupa Padre. It is a beautiful community, surrounded by mountains. Many times the teachers who travel there stay overnight because of the distance. The kids are playful, energetic, and loving. We were welcomed with open arms. So glad to know that these much needed supplies will help provide quality education in Chupa Padre and Huachinguero. Thanx for the update!-daniel
