NB. Once again, couldn't upload a picture...
Tuesday morning I got the bus to Tilcara, which is a small town about 30 minutes or so from Purmamarca. To get there you drive through the mountains, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, needless to say it was a beautiful drive. Tilcara is another place surrounded by mountains as it is in the Quebrada. It's bigger than Purmamarca but it's still small and the LP from 2010 gives 6800 as its population. The hostel has a garden area and a patio with a lovely view. My time in Tilcara has mostly been spent wandering around the town, enjoying the views, eating nice food (lots of tasty goat's cheese here), drinking red wine (my new habit, lol, despite not liking red wine less than 2 months ago I had it with dinner 5 nights in a row!) and reading a bit more of my Spanish book! Ruth came here from Purmamarca too and Rosa from Buenos Aires was at our hostel so we went for a very nice meal together. I also visited the Pucará (fortress). This settlement was reconstructed and more complete than the one I visited in San Pedro though most of it is still in ruins. I went on a guided tour which was interesting to find out more rather than just look at the site. The views from the top of the hill were great- the scenery around here is stunning!
I am not going to visit any more of the area now as I will be coming back here with my friend Anna when she comes in July. But it's a good job I didn't go straight to Bolivia as I originally thought I would as there were transport strikes on the 7th and 8th. I tried to find some info about what's going on now and it seemed like the situation is changing all the time so I got a ticket to leave on Friday hoping I'd be able to get to my first stop ok. But then on Thursday evening I heard that there are still blockades and you can't get anywhere from the border so I decided not to go. Tilcara is not a bad place to be "stuck" (in fact a lovely place) but I am keen to start my travels in Bolivia (6th country of the trip!) so I am going to go tomorrow (Sat 12th May) and hope i can reach my first stop, Tupiza …..
