Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
We had our first night without rain in a while which meant we finally had some dry clothes. It was also our first day of blue skies and sunshine so we explored the area around Elim Beach going first to the coloured sands. It was high tide so we just saw them from a distance. We tried driving to Cape Bedford but the track became too overgrown so we turned around. We then drove to the beach south of it and it was much better than the Somerset beach drive.
We packed up and drove into Cooktown as it was time we stocked up our fridge again. There isn’t much to see or do in Cooktown although they do have a good festival on this weekend which we are a bit early for. They fire a cannon, have billy cart races and even a wet jock competition to go alongside the wet t-shirt comp.
In 1885 Cooktown was sure they were about to be invaded by Russia and in response the government provided the town with one officer, this one cannon, three cannonballs and two rifles. Luckily the Russians didn’t invade because it sounds like the battle would be over quite quickly with that defence.
We had a play at the musical ship and the playground that seems to designed for adults as well as kids.
Zach rode his bike for the first time with no training wheels and he did a great job. He rode for about 50m the very first try before stopping.
Back at camp we had a surprise visit from Nanna and Fa and then we went to Grassy Hill Lookout in the afternoon.
