Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
This was a place that really grew on me. It seemed a bit plain to start with but by the end I loved the setup. This was helped by just as we were about to leave we went to look at "the swimming pool". It was a beautiful spot but the water was too cold this time of year. There was also a good setup with a camp kitchen, fire place and swinging chair beside an entertaining cockatoo but we didn't know it was there as it was basically hidden and I only found it after reading through a folder in a common area. There are “bush showers’ here, meaning although there is hot water it is only a 3 sided room so one side is open to the bush. It looked good until Matt told me Wazza’s house backed onto it.
Going from Proserpine through to Bowen it was a dramatic change in the landscape being green going straight to looking very dry and brown. Apparently, the rain tends to always miss Bowen and hit south of them. It was really noticeable and quite sad crossing over major rivers which were bone dry. Apart from this, the weather has been great – feels like spring days and fairly warm nights.
We weren’t going to stop overnight but after visiting Visitor Info centre we decided there was a bit to see. Although in the end, we still didn’t end up snorkelling which they supposedly have some nice reefs. I would have liked to snorkel Murray’s Bay which we found doing the walk through the headlands (Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trail). We spent the afternoon exploring Gray’s Bay which was very calm compared to Horseshoe Bay which was more populated but very choppy and windy.
Unfortunately this caravan park has been the worst value for money and by far the most expensive. It was $47 for one night which was powered and but the other facilities were of far less quality or non- existent compared to where we have stayed in the past.
Late afternoon we took a drive up Flagstaff Hill to see 360 degree views of Bowen. It was okay but there was a fire on a nearby island so it was quite hazy.
