Today I saw an old man. He looked to be in his late 60’s, early 70’s. His hair was grey and thin, he was wearing old man shoes, black warn trousers, and a shirt underneath an old green jumper. He had a slight old mans hunchback and looked a little frail. But this old man wasn’t walking along, he was riding along on a 10 year olds scooter, the old type that you have one foot on while the other foot pushes you along, the type you always wanted as a kid but soon realised they were a lot of hard work, especially when you tried to keep up with your friend who was riding a bike. It was great, he was minding his own business, he wasn’t loopy (as far as I could tell) it was just his way of getting around. Just wanted to share that with you. You probably don’t care and would rather hear about how 2 days before I was running to catch my train to work, it was 8:35 in the morning, my leg were tired I had my sports bag in my hand and I was running full speed up the ramp towards the train when I heard the slight beeping informing you to STAY CLEAR of the doors as they were closing. I managed to round the corner to see them closing as I threw my arm and bag in through the train door expecting that the would sense a human arm in the way and they this would trigger them to open again…….. except this didn’t happen. So now I had my arm (still holing my bag) trapped inside the train,… and the rest of my body outside the train. I started thinking "oh s***" but not the "ah s***" you may think if your arm was trapped in a soon to move train or when you used to get your head/arm or leg suck in a gate when you were a kid, but just "ah s***" as in "oh well, never mind" like id just spilt ketchup on my jeans. Nice to know I can stay calm in an emergency. People on the train started to panic though and every one started franticly pressing the door button and trying to pull the doors open. I am pleased to tell you that the doors did eventually open and I arrived to work on time with my arm a little bruised but still attached to my shoulder.
All this sums up my time in Melbourne so far. I have a normal life as if back at home but little things keep happening, like getting locked out of the house during a drunk night out and having to break in through the windows, which included climbing a fence ( a high one at that) and almost falling to my death (ok a bit extreme), like missing my stop twice in the same morning because I was too busy reading my book to notice I was at my station, so I got on a train in the opposite direction to go back to work and did the same thing again ! doh !
I live with a girl called Ang. We get along like a house on fire (thankfully not ours…..yet),. And before any of you ask, no we are not together and neither will we be. I have been working for Bupa Australia since late August. I work in the Membership team. I don’t have to answer the phones and they trust me in debiting peoples bank accounts !!! hahah fools, so every thing at work is grand. I spend most nights at home with Ang or we go out for some thing to eat (which is much more common over here). I spend most weekends with Paul, Chan and Khian, or I train (running) or me and Ang do some thing. And just like home, now im working the weekends fly by.
I ran a half marathon a while back (October 15th) and managed to run it in 1 hour 44 mins. I’m currently training for the Paris marathon on April 15th. I’m all registered and ready to go. Ill be going over with Chrisinte (from Sydney) and some other friends. It was a great idea to start with… but now I’m not so sure L
Last week was the Melbourne Cup. This is a horse race sooo big that they made it a bank holiday ! every one gets the day off. The races last a week but as the adverts say "the race that stops the nation" is the Melbourne Cup on the Tuesday. I had a sweepwith work and my horse was called Zabeet. On the day of the race me and Ang went to a bar/resturant to watch the race. The whole world must have been there and I was told that most places would be the same. Any way the race got underway and much to my supprise my hore was leading, then half way into the race… my horse is still leading, then after a few too many smart comments about how well my horse was doing….. oh dear, my horse starts to slip back down the ranks until I cant even see him any more. When I arrived at work the next day I was told that I had won my money back…. Why ? because my horse had finished 24th out of 24 !!! that’s what you get for backing a 1 legged chicken in a horse race !
Its coming upto christmas and I imagin the weather is not great over there, it gets dark early, the town light will be turned on soon (if not on already) and the xmas parts are about to start. Its strange being here, not to rub it in but its light from 5:30am till about 9pm, its getting hotter and hotter every day, but yet christmas trees are in the windows and santa has is bord shorts on ! it doesn’t feel like christmas at all. There was a massive, masive xmas parade last Saturday in the city and it was rossting and every one had ballons and confetti every were, its wrong ! My plans for xmas are to fly upto Sydney on fri 22nd and spend christmas with some old traveling buddys (from Cairnes) and come back to Melbourne on the 27th. Then for New Year im planning on going to some posh house and lake with Paul and other friends for fishing and drinking (not too sure those two should be put together !)
Erm what else to tell you ? I know I have didn’t finish the journal about my time inSydney…. I will but the old man this morning made me laugh and I wanted to tell you about him.. bless. So I will finish the Sydney thing soon, as well as add some pictures from sydney and Melbourne.
Hope every one is well.
Keep in touch
