The second of our destinations in Cambodia was Kampot, a riverside town around 45 minutes west along the coast from Kep. The town is certainly larger and busier than Kep, however it retains the relaxed and laid back feel. The majority of the town is located alongside the river, the streets are lined with dilapidated colonial buildings that are now used as cafes, restaurants and hotels. We spent many an afternoon drinking smoothies and people watching out of our favourite cafe OM, an organic cafe with its own farm.
The town appears to be a magnet for Western expats, many of them running the said cafes and restaurants. They are an interesting bunch of predominantly older males, with long grey hair tied in a ponytail and wrinkly tan skin. They drive around on their expensive motorbikes, in hippie clothing and a lack of general hygiene. They are normally accompanied by their young local wife. The most concerning thing is the 'Gary glitter' side of things, Cambodia has been known for its child prostitution and sexual exploits. Not a nice thought at all, but you do question why all these similar men live in a country with little government and heath standards. But Cambodian government has recently stepped up its prosecution towards these types of crimes. We don't know if these people have been involved in any of these things, but you do wonder.
Our hotel confirmed our feels that Cambodia is new to tourism, just like our previous hotel the staff seemed very untrained and lacked general etiquette. The very rude manger was our biggest problem when we were shown to a twin room instead of a double. When we politely complained he asked us if we really needed a double?!?! No we just booked it for the laughs....of course we would like a double. Next we realised that we were meant to get a room with a balcony and that's when he turned ugly. 'You should have requested that' 'you can't choose your own room' 'I have no rooms with a balcony free' ' you can cancel and go somewhere else' 'I don't know how to log onto booking.com and change that information'. Basically he had booked out our room and didn't once say sorry he got very angry and defensive. And to top it off we got our travel cable lock stretched when we locked our bags away in the wardrobe, someone was inquisitive to see inside. They will be receiving a fabulous review! Oh and the pool was green, we questioned if it had been turned into a pond.
On one of our evenings we went on a river cruise to watch the sunset and find some firefly's on the river. It was a small wooden boat with a makeshift bar below and the roof of the boat was used as the viewing space. We sat on the roof of the boat, not too near the edge! The scenery changed as we headed up river from cafes to jungle with the National Park Bokors hills in the background. The sunset beautifully behind the hills as we travelled up river and the darkness drew in. It was such a peacefully and relaxing journey...... Until the staff decided to put some music on. We don't mean local tranquil music, it was blasted out of the speakers from Frozen songs to LAMFO's Shots song. However this music didn't scare off the fireflies from nearby bushes and trees. It would have been very magical with a better music choice. As we headed back to town the stars shone down on us, with electrical storms lighting up the sky in the distance.
India and Adam are the lovely couple we met in Sri Lanka, they have been teaching English in Phnom Penh in Cambodia over the past month. They headed to Kampot on a country holiday, so we had the chance to meet up with them on their last evening. We headed to a small chic tapas bar in town, it had lovely small dishes and fantastic cocktails that we splurged on. It was great to meet up again and catch up, we had both been up to alot since we last saw each other at the start of our trips. We had lots of advice for them on their trip to Vietnam and they had lots of information for our trip to Phnom Penh the Cambodian capital.
