Just a quick update, Michael and Graham decided that we would do the rafting tour and paid the deposit without my knowledge! The first day was very tame, nice relaxing journey down the river with lovely scenery all around. Slept in even more basic accommodation than the trekking tour if that's possible as the hut we slept in didn't even have four walls! Did however have mosquito nets which we could tuck in underneath us all around - very necessary as when we went to get into bed there was a huge spider right next to our bed so i spent the next half an hour scouring the place with a torch for any of his friends! It wasn't as cold as on the trek either so had a much better nights sleep considering where we were.
The second day was a whole different story, started off very nice and we had a bathe in a homemade hot spring pool with mud bath. The river we were on soon after joined up with the Pai River so doubled in width and volume and straight away there were much bigger rapids. My fears were met when the instructor who had gone the whole tour without even a lifejacket started to tie all our belongings into the raft and also put his helmet on...Soon after we came to a 2 meter or so drop in the rapid and promptly capsized as we went down it. I had been cowering in the middle of the raft as per the leader's instructions so because of the way the raft went over i ended up underneath it! Not a nice experience but i got out ok and none of us hit any rocks. I did lose a flip flop during the incident but luckily Michael had been thrown out before me and was able to grab it as it passed him!
So Michael and Graham loved that and thought it was the best part of the trip, lets just say i will not be going white water rafting again any time soon!
Since then we hired motorbikes and drove out to see the tribe of women with long necks in their village. So weird to see, their necks are stretched every year by adding more metal rings so the older women look abnormal. If they were to take the rings off then their necks would collapse and they would suffocate. You'll have to see the pictures as it's hard to explain how weird it looks!
Made the long journey back to Chiangmai today and have booked to go to Laos tomorrow which will take about 3 days to get to Louang Pobang in the north with two days of that being spent on a slow boat. Can't wait til we can relax at one place without any travelling for once! Not long now and we can relax on the beach in the islands....
