Hi, got back from the islands yesterday and are spending our last day in Fiji trying to wash our sand and sea soaked clothes plus dry out the rest of our stuff which has become rather damp due to the persistent rain we've had during the last week or so! It wouldn't have been a problem apart from one boat transfer we had to do between 2 islands on a tiny little boat with no cover in the pouring rain. It's still hot even when it's cloudy or raining so it hasn't stopped us from being on the beach most of the time or from the excellent snorkelling. Has stopped us from getting good pictures of the islands though, doesn't quite do it justice with a grey sky!
We spent 5 nights on Mana Island in the Mamanuca group of islands and then 3 nights on Nanunya Lailai in the Visayas. The accommodation in our price range was pretty rustic to say the least but staying in a traditional thatched 'Bure' on the last island was nice to experience. Both islands had excellent snorkelling. On our last night a big group turned up to stay in our resort so the owners laid on a 'Fijian Night' for us where we were all treated to a Kava ceremony where you all sit around the table and nominate a Chief and a Spokesperson and take it in turns to down a bowl of the muddy water like drink. It's supposed to have a narcotic effect but only if you drink about 4 gallons of it. All we felt after a few was a numb tongue! So that was a good laugh.Â
Now looking forward to our next week on Raratonga in the Cook Islands and then Tahiti...
