Hey all!
As we have a spare few seconds this evening, we thought we'd treat you guys to another blog!
Since our last blog, we've covered quite a few miles! So from Rotorua we continued on our trek south to a town call Taupo, which is famous for having the largest lake in NZ, formed by a massive vocanic eruption about 26000 years ago! Its b.l.oo.d.y huge! We only spent one night here and didnt do anything too strenuous as we needed to save our energy for the mammoth trek the next day across The Tongariro national park.
We got up pretty early the next day and headed over to the national park to begin our...19.4km walk up and over mount tongariro! MY GOD was it hard....well, for nicky anyway! Just when you think you've done the hardest incline ever, you go round a corner and see that you've got another couple of k up to the summit! I loved it though as mount tongariro is next to mount ngauruhoe which is also better known as mount doom from the lord of the rings trilogy...it was an awesome sight and I must've taken about 100 pics of it from all angles!
Anyway, we just about made it to the top (nicky got quite hard to carry by time we got there!) only to see that we've got about 11.5km left...although that was all downhill!
In all honesty nicky did the trek surprisingly well and even had energy to run the final 4km...seriously!!
All in all, it took is 7hrs to do it, with a few stops to admire the views of course!
But as you can probably guess, nicky was a little bit sore the next day (I was ready for another hike of course...haha, I wish!) so a few of us decided it would be a great idea to have a chilled out day watching the lotr trilogy...which was really cool seeing as you could see mount doom from our hostel!!
Next day we basically travelled most of the day and ended up in Wellington...via a few scenic places of course! Once in wellington, we headed to the world famous (!) exhibition of the first collosal squid ever caught, at wellingtons Te Papa museum. Apart from that, we didn't really do much else apart from having a few drinks on the main bar strip in wellington.
Next day, early doors, we got a ferry from wellington to the south island and headed straight to where we are now, at the Abel Tasman national park, where we've just done a 13km coastal walk which this place is known for. The beaches are great but the only down side is that they get bl.oo.dy gale force winds every afternoon, so you're frezing by 4pm!
The hostel we're staying at is on a working farm which is really cool, part from the occasional visit from the local mice and cockroaches! :-) The portaloos and outside showers also add to the experience! But I just see it as all good preparation for asia! :-)
Right then, that your lot for now...we'll get some more pics on soon and get another blog on in a few days.
Take care all, and get writing some message you slackers! :-)
Love Jay & Nic xxxxx
